Summary
Flamenco dancer Maria Benitez and Yuriko, a modern dancer who has performed with Martha Graham and her own company, discuss their respective careers. Benitez talks about the influence of the Native American dances she saw during her childhood in New Mexico, and her approach to choreography. She also demonstrates how to play castanets. Yuriko reminisces about her first contacts with Graham, her observations of Graham's qualities as a dancer, and the experience of inheriting Graham's role in Primitive mysteries. She recalls her work with Jerome Robbins on the stage and film versions of The king and I. Both dancers consider the effects of ballet training on other dance forms, and stress the need for energy and emotion in performance. Performance excerpts include Benitez in Reflexiones, which she choreographed, Alegrías, and Soleá. Yuriko is seen in b&w footage from her work The cry.
