Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Cuban and Puerto Rican dance and music forms, notably the plena and the bomba, are discussed by Juan Ramón Gutiérrez, leader of the musical group Los Pleneros de la 21; Puerto Rican composer Marco Rizo; and Morton Marks, an anthropologist and musicologist. They describe and trace African and Spanish influences, their cross-fertilization and transmission. Los Pleneros de la 21 perform examples of the plena and bomba, followed by Gutiérrez's demonstration of musical instruments. Rizo describes the danzón, a Cuban musical and dance form, and an example composed by him is played. Esoterica balletica features an excerpt of Carnival in New York, a film (?) produced by Angela Fontanez-Fleming. Among the dances seen on this recording are the Cuban Kubata, a masked dance from the Congo, and stilt dances.
