Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Guests are six young dance students: Darren Gibson, the first graduate of the New Ballet School to join the Feld Ballet; Rebecca Metzger and Robert Lyon, School of American Ballet students who received the first Mae L. Wien Memorial Awards; Efrain Bracero, a student at the Dance Theatre of Harlem school; Angela Zieziulewicz, a student of the Joffrey Ballet's American Ballet Center; and Sant'gria Bello, a student at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Continuing the discussion begun in *MGZIC 9-3019 Attitudes and training: Young professionals, Part 1, each describes a typical day in his/her life. Other topics include classroom etiquette and discipline, practice clothes, leisure-time activities, availability of career guidance, comparative opportunities for male and female dancers, and the qualities they admire in dancers. Recordings depict classes at the School of American Ballet (including footage of teachers Suki Schorer and Stanley Williams), the Ailey school, the New Ballet School, and the Joffrey school. In addition, excerpts from Virginia Brook's 1987 film School of American Ballet: Mae L. Wien Memorial Awards depict Lyon in a variation from Balanchine's Stars and stripes, and Metzger in a variation from Balanchine's Cortège hongrois. Bello is seen in a studio performance at the Ailey school, and Gibson performs in Feld's Harbinger with the Feld Ballet. Under the closing credits, Balanchine may be glimpsed rehearsing children in Act III of Coppélia.
