Summary
Three judges of the 1987 New York International Ballet Competition, Alicia Alonso of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Arnold Spohr of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Arthur Mitchell of Dance Theatre of Harlem, talk about the benefits dancers can gain from participating in competitions, then go on to discuss in more general terms the qualities of a good dancer. Recorded excerpts depict entrants in the New York competition and the International Ballet Festival at Varna, Alonso in Taglioni's variation in Dolin's Pas de quatre, Alonso and Dolin in Giselle (b&w), Spohr performing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (b&w), and members of Dance Theatre of Harlem in John Taras's The firebird, Valerie Bettis's A streetcar named desire, and other works.
