Summary
Guests are Vanoye Aikens, a former member of the Katherine Dunham company who assisted her in reviving works for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Gary De Loatch, a member of the Ailey company. They discuss rehearsals for The magic of Katherine Dunham, an evening-long retrospective first presented in the U.S. in December 1987. Aikens reminisces about dancing in Dunham's company (especially in Tropical revue), discusses her technique, and recalls the reception of her choreography. De Loatch comments upon the challenges of reviving her works, and describes the experiences of Ailey's dancers in doing so. The program is illustrated with footage of Dunham and Aikens rehearsing the Ailey company in various dances from the retrospective.
