Summary
Guests are dancer/choreographer Frankie Manning and Robert Crease, a writer and co-founder of the New York Swing Society. They discuss the origins of the lindy hop in the Savoy Ballroom in the 1930s, its musical and dance predecessors such as the collegiate, and some individuals who helped develop it, such as George "Shorty" Snowden. Manning recalls the dance contests at the Savoy, which often gave rise to new steps, and performing groups such as Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, organized by Herbert White. His own group, the Congaroos, is seen in a b&w film excerpt. Manning also describes his own invention of the aerial step, with his partner Frieda (?) Washington. Dance excerpts (all b&w) depict lindy hopping at the Savoy and in the motion picture Hellzapoppin', in which Manning appears. Al Minns and Leon James are also seen performing.
