Summary

Fred Benjamin and Lynn Simonson, jazz dancers, teachers, and choreographers, discuss their work in separate interviews. Benjamin discusses European and American attitudes towards jazz dancing, the influence of critical responses, and the inspiration and influence of Talley Beatty on his work. The Fred Benjamin Dance Company is seen in excerpts from Benjamin's Parallel lines and Straight from the heart. Simonson describes jazz dancing as a style rather than a technique, and notes its divergence on the commercial and concert stages. Though she postulates the ideal of the total dancer, well-versed in all dance forms, she points out some qualities that are unique to jazz. She is seen in excerpts of her Duet for the first time, with Charles Wright. Both guests discuss what constitutes good teaching, and the role of music as inspiration for their works. In an additional feature, percussionist Max Roach describes how he keeps his work fresh. He is seen in action in a tape incorporating special video techniques.
