Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Charles Wuorinen, Lourdes Lopez, and William Forsythe, respectively a composer, dancer, and choreographer involved in the New York City Ballet's American Music Festival (1988), discuss various aspects of the collaborative process, with special reference to the festival. As an example, Wuorinen describes his collaboration with Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux on Five. He also contrasts conducting for dance performances and concert music, and talks about improvisation in music. Forsythe discusses the use of improvisation in choreography, and Lopez compares the choreographic approaches of Lar Lubovitch (also a participant in the festival), Forsythe, and George Balanchine. An audio excerpt of Leslie Stuck's score for Forsythe's Behind the china dogs is played, and Forsythe gives a brief demonstration of his dance style. Wuorinen's music is represented by an excerpt from Bonnefoux's Courtly dances, performed by the Louisville Ballet.
