- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Guests are Kevin Jeff, artistic director of Jubilation! Dance Company; company member Robin Gray; and performance artist Thomas Pinnock. They talk about various concerns of the black artist: finding his or her identity, coping with stereotypes of black dance and art, and drawing upon African culture as inspiration. They note the need for variety and balance in repertory, the broad range of preoccupations demonstrated by black artists, and the importance of communicating with their audiences. Gray and the Jubilation! Dance Company are seen in excerpts from Jeff's Flack, Nia Keii (A gift of life), and other works. Pinnock is seen in The lure and the lore, created with Ayoka Chenzira. A performance excerpt by Dance Brazil is also shown. In Esoterica balletica, Thea Nerissa Barnes of the Martha Graham Dance Company discusses the problem of stereotyping that confronts many black dancers.
