Summary
Guests are Barry Martin, director of Déjà Vu Dance Theatre, Madeleine Yayodele Nelson of Women of the Calabash, and Alfred Gallman, director of Newark Dance Theatre. They discuss their companies' aims and activities, including educating audiences about African-American culture, commenting on socio-political issues, and expressing spiritual and religious beliefs. They discuss the challenges of developing audiences and dealing with preconceptions about black dance. Gallman describes a project that will help companies acquire works by black choreographers such as Talley Beatty. An in-studio performance by Women of the Calabash includes Nelson's instrumental piece Coming home. Recorded performance excerpts depict the Newark Dance Theatre in Rats' alley and Beatty's Mourner's bench, and Déjà Vu Dance Theatre in unidentified works.
