Summary

Author Vicente García-Márquez and premier danseur Igor Youskevitch share their insights into the choreography of Leonide Massine. Among the points they discuss are his close identification with Russian ballet, especially as exemplified by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; his reputation as performer and choreographer; his invention of a notation system and concern for documenting his choreography; his objectives in creating symphonic ballets such as Les présages and Choreartium; and his interest in counterpoint, "grotesque" steps, and mass movement in choreography. Youskevitch, who worked personally with Massine, reminisces about his performances, and García-Márquez provides supporting accounts by Tatiana Riabouchinska and Tamara Toumanova. Archival footage of Les présages, Le beau Danube (b&w), The good-humored ladies, and Choreartium (b&w) is screened.
