Summary
Alvin Ailey looks back upon his long career as dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of his own company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Among the subjects he discusses are his early work with Lester Horton, and his study of Horton technique; the contribution of Jack Cole; his study of Method Acting with Stella Adler; Anna Sokolow's influence in leading him to a "new tangent"; the special qualities of black dancers; his attempts to build a multiracial company and to preserve works by black choreographers such as Katherine Dunham; his efforts to help younger choreographers such as Talley Beatty; and the development of an audience for dance among the black community. Dance excerpts depict Ailey's Revelations and Beatty's The stack-up, from the videorecording An evening with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Katherine Dunham rehearsing the Ailey company in preparation for the evening-length program The magic of Katherine Dunham.
