Summary
Shelley Washington and Richard Colton, two former members of the Twyla Tharp Dance Company who followed her to American Ballet Theatre when she became its artistic associate, talk about making the transition from one company to another, and teaching Tharp's repertory to ballet dancers. They comment upon the special qualities developed by Tharp's training; the challenges of learning her choreography, particularly works such as In the upper room; and the importance of finding one's own interpretation. The two guests are seen, along with other members of the Tharp company, in excerpts from Making television dance, The Catherine wheel, and Baker's dozen, from the Twyla Tharp scrapbook. Cynthia Harvey and other ABT members are seen in an excerpt from Don Quixote. In an additional feature, More perspectives on modern and ballet, Gabriela Taub-Darvash, interviewed at Broadway Dance Center, shares her observations of modern and ballet dancers, and is seen teaching class. Frances Becker satirizes ballet and modern dancers.
