Summary
Vicky Shick, a former member of Trisha Brown and Company, Neil Greenberg, formerly with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and Christine Dakin, a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, recall their experiences of working with the founders of their respective companies: Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, and Martha Graham. They discuss how these choreographers transmitted their ideas in rehearsals, particularly when (in the cases of Cunningham and Graham) age prevented them from demonstrating movement full-out. The guests also discuss how they prepared to perform in these choreographers' works, whether through company or outside classes. Dance excerpts include Cunningham's cinedance version of Coast zone, created with Charles Atlas; Graham's Cave of the heart and Acts of light; Brown's Set and reset and Line up; and Greenberg's Stage-gun-dance and Morphine. Recorded footage also shows Cunningham in class and rehearsal.
