Summary

Guests, interviewed separately, are Jeffrey Gribler and Joan Myers Brown. Gribler, a dancer who also serves as senior ballet master of the Pennsylvania Ballet, talks about his early training in Dayton, Ohio; the appeal of the Balanchine repertory; his work as a ballet master; his own qualities as a dancer; and the unsuccessful merger of the Pennsylvania and Milwaukee Ballets. He is seen rehearsing his role in Bournonville divertissements, working with the company as ballet master, and in class. Myers, the founder/director of Philadelphia School of Dance Arts and Philadanco (Philadelphia Dance Company), reminisces about her early training, which included studies with Antony Tudor, and talks about the racism she encountered as a young black dancer. She discusses the establishment and activities of her school and company, the achievements of her students as professional dancers, and the difficulty of finding financial support. Recorded excerpts depict children from her school in performance, and Philadanco in studio rehearsals of Gene Hill Sagan's Elegy and Sweet agony.
