Summary
Guests are Sharon Brophy, a ballroom dancer and choreographer, Nelson Avila of the dance team Nélida and Nelson, and Argentine novelist Luisa Valenzuela. They discuss various aspects of the Argentine tango, including machismo as an element of the tango; the musical roots of the tango and its predecessor, the milonga; the contrast between the Argentine tango and the ballroom tango (American, International, or English style); the lyrics of tango songs and their function as social commentary; attempts to modernize the tango by composer Astor Piazzolla and others; and the ambience of the tango clubs. Brophy and Avila present in-studio demonstrations of the tango, and recorded footage of tango dancers is screened, including b&w footage of tango singer Carlos Gardel. In an additional interview, actor Robert Duvall talks about his interest in and observations of the Argentine tango.
