Summary

Two-part documentary on the choreography of Roland Petit, told mainly in his own words, and profusely illustrated with color and b&w footage of his works. Among the subjects he discusses are his experiences with the Paris Op{era Ballet, the Ballets des Champs-{Elys{ees, the Ballets de Paris, and Ballet National de Marseille; his collaborations with Jean Cocteau, Boris Kochno, and others; the classical heritage and its enrichment by other forms of dance; Zizi Jeanmaire's role as muse; and the contributions of the many designers with whom he has worked (among the latter is Yves Saint-Laurent, seen in a brief interview). He examines at length his ballets Le jeune homme et la mort, Carmen, and Notre Dame de Paris. Also represented are Ma Pavlova, Le chat botté, La chauve souris, Proust remembered [Les intermittences du coeur], Coppélia, Les quatre saisons, Les forains, Paradise lost, Parisiana 25, The blue angel, The nutcracker, Extase, Les barres parallèles, La chambre, Mon truc en plumes, Pink champagne, Les demoiselles de la nuit, Septentrion, Maldoror, and Etreintes [Valentine's love songs].
