Summary
Germaine Acogny, a Senegalese dancer, choreographer, and teacher, looks back upon her training and career in Africa and Europe, including her former directorship of Mudra Afrique, the Dakar-based branch of Maurice Béjart's Mudra school. She describes the role of dance in traditional African culture and her own efforts to draw upon African as well as European sources in developing her own dance technique. She discusses her schools in Toulouse, France, and Casamance, Senegal; describes the characteristics of her dance technique; and shares her observations as a faculty member of the Jazz Dance World Congress.
