Part of the Balanchine Symposia, a series of public programs presented by the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in connection with the exhibition Balanchine. Analysis of the relationship of music and choreography in Balanchine's works, particularly his use of pulse. Examples (some illustrated with video excerpts) are drawn from Agon, Mozartiana, Tchaikovsky pas de deux, Jewels: Rubies, The four temperaments, and Stravinsky violin concerto. -- Cassette 2: Question-and-answer period (approx. 9 min.). -- Lecture: "Composing for the dance: Some remarks on the Stravinsky/Balanchine collaboration" (approx. 53 min.) by Charles H. Joseph, Professor of Music, Skidmore College.
