Analysis of the relationship of music and choreography in Balanchine's works, particularly his use of pulse. Examples (some illustrated with video excerpts) are drawn from Agon, Mozartiana, Tchaikovsky pas de deux, Jewels: Rubies, The four temperaments, and Stravinsky violin concerto. -- Cassette 2: Question-and-answer period (approx. 9 min.). -- Lecture: "Composing for the dance: Some remarks on the Stravinsky/Balanchine collaboration" (approx. 53 min.) by Charles H. Joseph, Professor of Music, Skidmore College. Analysis of Stravinsky's working process and his interaction with Balanchine, focusing on Apollo, Orpheus, and Agon. -- Cassette 3: Continuation of lecture, followed by question-and-answer period (approx. 16 min.). -- Film: Meditation (approx. 9 min., b&w). Perf. by Suzanne Farrell and Jacques d'Amboise.
