- Summary
- Documentary about Natalia Makarova's return to Leningrad in January 1989, eighteen years after her defection. Scenes of her activities upon her return are interspersed with glimpses backward at her early years with the Kirov Ballet school and company (including footage of a 1967 performance of Chopiniana), her defection, and some of her activities abroad. She is seen receiving tributes from her compatriots in a trade union hall, rehearsing with Irina Kolpakova, visiting her former teachers Natalia Dudinskaya and Konstantin Sergeyev at the Kirov Ballet School, coaching Zhanna Ayupova and Aleksandr Kurkov in the Act II pas de deux from Swan lake, revisiting scenes of her childhood, performing two pas de deux from John Cranko's Onegin with Alexander Sombart at a Kirov Ballet gala performance, and finally donating her costume and pointe shoes to the Leningrad State Museum of Theater and Music. Makarova herself talks about her life and experiences, with additional commentaries by Clement Crisp, Alla Osipenko, Serge Vikulov, Oleg Vinogradov, and Irina Kolpakova.
