- Summary
- Educational tape designed to introduce health care professionals to the special challenges of dance medicine. Dr. William Hamilton, the official orthopedist of the New York City Ballet, and physical therapists Marika Molnar and Katy Keller discuss the physical and psychological requirements of dance and the problems these can produce. They make detailed analyses of turnout, relevé, plié, tendu, and grand battement; discuss overuse syndromes, acute injuries, and fatigue; describe the use of the postural static screen in assessing the dancer's physique; and present a case study of an Achilles tendon rupture. Dancers Ellen Levine, Keith Saunders, Bradley Jones, and Michele Brangwen talk about their injuries and their experiences with health care. Dancers who demonstrate the points made by Hamilton, Molnar, and Keller include Levine, Jeanne Ruddy, Lillie Stewart, Jill Esterson, Karen Gstalder, Jennifer Habig, Suki John, Noel Reiss, Kira Seamon, Monique Meunier, and Arch Higgins. The program also includes brief excerpts of works by Michael Mao (performed by Dance Express) and Matthew Nash (performed by Matthew Nash Music and Dance).
