- CONTENTS: Reel 1 (approx. 45 min.): Part 1. Lecture-demonstration on choreography. Johansen compares plotless and dramatic ballets, and uses a brief dance to music by Dave Brubeck to demonstrate how changes in musical counts, spatial patterns, and style can create different effects. He discusses the significance of Oklahoma! in the history of musicals. The ensemble performs a dance depicting characters and situations. -- Reel 2 (approx. 45 min.): Part 2. Johansen discusses how television and film have extended the range of dance through special effects in recorded works and wider dissemination of performances. He also talks about electronic music, the choreographic approach of George Balanchine, the collaboration of choreographer and composer, and folkloric elements in American dance. A solo titled Charade and ensemble works to music by Edgard Varèse and Aaron Copland illustrate his remarks.
