Summary
Documentary on selected dance interpretations of Igor Stravinsky's The rite of spring, beginning with Vaslav Nijinsky's ballet of 1913 (discussed by reconstructors Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer), and including works by Mary Wigman (discussed by Jacqueline Robinson), Maurice Béjart, Pina Bausch, Martha Graham (discussed by Ron Protas and Christine Dakin), and Mats Ek. André Boucourechliev and Pierre Boulez provide musical analyses of Stravinsky's score, and Stravinsky himself is heard in a 1961 interview. The discussion of each dance work is illustrated with rehearsal and performance excerpts by performers and companies including the Joffrey Ballet, Marie-Claude Pietragalla and the Paris Opéra Ballet, Sylvie Guillem and Marc Hwang with Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Ruth Amaranthe and the Wuppertaler Tanztheater, Christine Dakin and the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Yvan Auzely and Ana Laguna with the Cullbergbaletten.
