- Summary
- Episode 4 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. France, Japan, Ghana, and Java show how court dances serve to reinforce the power of a sovereign, preserve social hierarchies, express cultural ideals, support the state religion, and serve other functions vital to government. Historian Elizabeth Aldrich and Francine Lancelot, artistic director of Ris et Danceries, examine dance at the court of Louis XIV. Bugaku, the court dance of Japan, is discussed by Tadamoro Ōno, a member of the Imperial Household, and composer Toshirō Mayuzumi. Dances at the palace of the Asantehene, the elected king of the Asante people of Ghana, are described by Albert Opoku and Kwame Arhin. The palace of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X of Yogyakarta in central Java offers examples of the wayang wong (dance drama), bedoyo (women's court dance), and other dances, with commentaries by Rio Sasminta Mardawa (also called Romo Sas), Suharti Soedarsono, and Benedictus Suharto.
