Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (57 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
Documentary on the life and work of Martha Graham. Highlighted topics include her early dance training with Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, her professional and private relationships with Louis Horst and Erick Hawkins, the development of her modern dance technique, her longtime collaboration with sculptor Isamu Noguchi, her use of Greek mythological themes, and the problems of her later years, such as her difficult decision to retire as a performer. Her former company members and associates Patricia Birch, Bertram Ross, Robert Cohan, Pearl Lang, Erick Hawkins, Jane Dudley, Jean Erdman, and Ronald Protas comment upon various aspects of her personality and work, as do critics Anna Kisselgoff, Holly Brubach, and Clive Barnes, and choreographers Agnes de Mille and Glen Tetley. Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson discuss her training from the special perspective of actors whose aim is to increase body expressivity. Graham speaks for herself in several pre-recorded interviews and is seen dancing in excerpts from Tanagra, Heretic, Lamentation, Frontier, Every soul is a circus (with Hawkins and Merce Cunningham), Appalachian spring, Acrobats of God, and Cortege of eagles. Other works singled out for discussion include Diversion of angels, Errand into the maze, Cave of the heart, Seraphic dialogue, and Clytemnestra; excerpts from Acts of light and Steps in the street are also shown.
