The events depicted include the official opening of the festival by Mayor Joe Riley, Jr.; interviews with the festival's founder, Gian Carlo Menotti; footage of Dance Theatre of Harlem rehearsing George Balanchine's The four temperaments and performing John Taras's Firebird; interviews with Stephanie Dabney and Arthur Mitchell of Dance Theatre of Harlem; scenes from Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly (directed by Ken Russell) and Barber's Antony and Cleopatra (directed by Menotti); a fundraising auction for the Spoleto Festival Orchestra; and a production of Menotti's The unicorn, the gorgon, and the manticore (choreography: Salvatore Aiello), performed by North Carolina Dance Theatre and the Westminster Choir.
