Summary
Program 2 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. This program begins by examining the symbolism of the circle in ritual and religious dancing, then focuses on the relationship of dance and religion in three cultures. The uneasy history of dance and Christianity in the western world is discussed by Diane Apostolos-Cappadona and the Reverends Thomas A. Kane and Michael Taylor. Dance among the Yoruba of West Africa is shown as an element of both Christian and traditional worship. The latter is represented by egungun [ancestor] dances and a ritual honoring the goddess Osun. Commentators in this segment are Akinwumi Isola, Oyin Ogunba, and Bayo Ogundijo. The integration of dance and religion in India is illustrated by a serpent ritual, martial arts exercises that combine physical and mental discipline, and performances of the dance forms Ottan Tullal and Bharata Natyam. Commentaries are offered by P. S. Ramachandran, Kapila Vatsyayan, Malavika Sarukkai, and Kalanidhi Narayanan.
