Summary
Program 4 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. Two classic theatrical dance forms, ballet in St. Petersburg and kabuki in Japan, are juxtaposed to bring out the similarities and differences in their origins, aims, and methods. The program focuses on the Kirov Ballet's production of The sleeping beauty, whose cast is led by the young ballerina Larissa Lezhnina, and the kabuki play Meoto dojoji, as performed by Bando Tamasaburo V and Kataoka Takao. Also seen in performance is actor-manager Ichikawa Ennosuke III. The three kabuki actors comment upon various aspects of their work, including their training and tradition, and the art of the onnagata or female impersonator. Lezhnina, Oleg Vinogradov, artistic director of the Kirov Ballet, and Ninel Kurgapkina of the Vaganova School discuss different facets of the Russian ballet tradition.
