  • Interview (ca. 68 min) / Alonso talks about his early days with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, his contributions to the establishment of ballet in Cuba through the Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, and the Ballet Alicia Alonso, his creation of the ballet Carmen for Maya Plisetskaya and the Bolshoi Ballet, and his decision to leave Cuba. He also discusses Cuban popular dances such as the rumba and mambo, and their role in creating a Cuban national style of dancing. His wife, dancer Sonia Calero, appears briefly.
