Summary
First in a series of tapes documenting the teaching methodology of skating instructor Gustave Lussi. The interviewees, many of them champion skaters, pay tribute to Lussi's innovative approach, which expanded the range of skating technique. Three types of spins--which Lussi called the killer (sit spin), the boxer (back scratch spin), and the lighthouse (forward scratch spin)--are analyzed in detail in lessons given by Lussi in 1990 to Simkin, Wylie, and Damigella, and demonstrations by Morrow. Footage of performances by champion skaters past and present, including Lussi himself, illustrate fine points of technique.
