Hatch, poet, playwright, and professor of English at City College of New York, and Camille Billops, sculptor, printmaker, and instructor at Rutgers University, describe the Hatch-Billops Collection, an archive of Black American cultural history, which they founded in 1971 in New York City as a private research library of theatre memorabilia, play manuscripts, taped interviews, slides, books, manuscripts, and other documentary material.
