Summary
Images of the earth, moon, sun, and space vehicles and astronauts: includes sunsets and earthrises, solar eclipses, natural features of the earth and moon, weather phenomena; locations on earth include: Algeria, Florida, Arabian desert, Himalayas, Szechwan Province in China, Great Bahamas Bank, the Nile delta, Corpus Christi Bay and Rio Grande delta plain, fires over Vietnam after bombing raid on Haiphong harbor, India, Africa and South America, the Pacific Ocean; images of astronauts include views in Gemini and Apollo craft, during extra-vehicular activities, and on the moon, including deploying ALSEP, jumping, posing with flag, and including one image that has photographer reflected in helmet of the other astronaut; family snapshot on the surface of the moon; space suits and helmets stowed aboard the lunar module; space vehicles, including a Saturn rocket stage, ATDA target vehicle, Agena target vehicle, Apollo Command and Lunar Modules.

  • Prints produced by Polaroid Corporation for the exhibit The View from Space: American Astronaut Photography, 1962-1972, which toured through the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Sevice between July 1989 and August, 1993. Includes photographs by 16 astronauts, which were selected from a frame-by-frame examination of the photographic archives of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Projects by Ron Schick and Julia Van Haaften, the exhibit curators.
  • Some images, including the color panoramas, and an enlargement of a stereoscopic image are made up of multiple prints.
