- Units I-IV consist primarily of images of immigrants, children and workers that Lewis Hine printed in 1939 for the Russell Sage Foundation Library. Unit V contains images made in Europe for the Red Cross, images of Hine and his family, and images that supplement or duplicate images in units I-IV.

- Collection consists of five units of photographs (one with two parts), each separately cataloged. Accompanying the photographs are manuscript and published materials, including original mounts and captions, a typescript text describing Hine's photography of immigrants, tear sheets from pubications containing Hine's images, and later publications about Hine and his work.
- Most photographs are mounted and numbered. Prints in Units I and II are mounted on gray mounts which bear typed labels and numbering by Hine. (Dark mounts were chosen to minimize signs of handling -- c.f. Abbott, A guide to Better photography, 1941, p. 127) Units III and IV were organized and mounted by the U.S. History, Local History and Geneology Division, Unit V was organized by USLHG, and a calendar describing the entire collection was prepared in 1967. Some are signed, recto, or in the negative.
