Biography
Austin Hansen, known primarily as a Harlem photographer, has had a career in photography that spans nearly seventy years. His photographic record documents the people, places, and events primarily in Harlem from the 1930s to the late 1980s.
During the Second World War, Hansen was drafted and served in the United States Navy from July 17, 1943 to January 26, 1945. After he received training as a combat photographer, he was stationed on Manus Island, in the South Pacific, to serve as a battalion photographer for the 21st Special Construction Battalion. However, he was prohibited from documenting military engagements and was instead assigned to record the daily operations of the base and the activities of the sailors and officers stationed there.
