- Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), Victorian romantic writer, was born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn of Irish-Greek parentage. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 from Europe and in 1890 went to Japan, where he wrote books and articles, taught in Japanese universities and became a citizen of Japan. He interpreted Japanese thought and life to the West.
