Description

Summary
Excerpts, mainly recorded in the open air, from a buong suong ritual ceremony celebrated in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Norodom Sihanouk (who became king in 1993). The recording begins with the gathering of the people at the sanctuary where the ritual takes place. Soon after the arrival of the dancers, Prince Sihanouk and his wife Princess Monique appear, heralded by the playing of music. The dancers offer fruit and incense to the spirits of the four directions, then enact episodes from a sacred dance-drama in which women play both male and female roles, some in masks. Appearing in these excerpts are Lim Kim Sieng (as the giant Ream Eyso), Pen Sok Chea (the god Vorachun), and Doeur Sophanny (the goddess Moni Mekhala). Prince Sihanouk prays for blessings for the people of the region. After the ceremony, the dancers offer private prayers in the sanctuary.
