Summary
Conversation between Martha Hill and Genevieve Oswald on the beginnings and evolution of the Dance Collection. Oswald, the collection's first curator, recalls Carleton Sprague Smith's pivotal role in forming an archives dedicated to dance. She and Hill reminisce about the climate for dance in 1948, when the Dance Collection was founded. They note the contributions of individual scholars and collectors, among them Walter Toscanini, Lincoln Kirstein, Porter McCray, Jerome Robbins, and Lillian Moore, all of whom helped the collection expand beyond the archives of contemporary dance that Oswald originally envisioned. They discuss the Dance Collection's groundbreaking achievement as a repository of materials of various kinds -- programs, films, graphic works, clippings, books, periodicals, and so on -- and its influence on other dance archives throughout the country.
