Summary
As part of the video project From silence to sound, ballerina Maria Tallchief critiques the second videorecording in this series of silent films with added piano accompaniment played by Dianne Chilgren. The films in question, both recorded by Carol Lynn at Jacob's Pillow in 1951, portray Tallchief and Michael Maule in excerpts from Sylvia: pas de deux and Firebird: pas de deux. Observing the films on a video monitor, Tallchief comments upon inaccuracies in the music synchronization and demonstrates correct phrasings, points out parts of the choreography that were revised to accommodate the limited stage space at Jacob's Pillow, and notes fine points of choreography that are often neglected in contemporary revivals.
