Originally written for a dance by Pearl Primus; probable first performance on April 23, 1944 at the 92nd Street Y (New York, N.Y.) with Sarah Malament (piano) along with recitation of the poem by Langston Hughes (cf. program, Dance Collection, New York Public Library).
