Biography (note)
  • The Mendelssohn Quintette Club was founded in 1849 and disbanded in 1895. Its personnel changed often and 30 different musicians participated over the years, but Thomas Ryan who played both viola and clarinet managed the club and remained active throughout. A double bass was added to the ensemble for the years 1876-1880. Tour groups usually included vocal and instrumental soloists besides the regular members. Cf. Am. Grove.
