Summary
Survey of traditional and alternative versions of the Christmas ballet The Nutcracker, to music by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky. Tradition is represented by George Balanchine's ballet, as danced by the New York City Ballet. Nichol Hlinka, a principal dancer with the company, is seen in a brief interview and in performance as the Sugarplum Fairy. Among the alternative Nutcrackers illustrated are Mark Morris's The hard nut; Debbie Allen's The chocolate nutcracker; ice shows headed by skaters Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner, and Peggy Fleming as the Sugarplum Fairy; a ballet in drag by the Gay Men's Chorus of Minneapolis; a performance by Barbie and Ken dolls (played by human actors); and a dance-along version in San Francisco. Jack Anderson, dance critic of the New York Times, comments on the various versions.
