Summary
Informal lecture-demonstration presented to an audience of tap dancers; some knowledge of tap dancing is helpful in fully appreciating this lecture. Brenda Bufalino surveys the history of tap dancing, beginning with its roots in Irish and African-American dance. Using dance and musical examples, she traces the evolution of tap dancing over time, particularly in relation to musical styles such as jazz, swing, and be-bop. Among the topics she discusses are dance composition, the influence of English music hall dancing and vernacular dances, tap dancing to classical music, tap dancing on Broadway and on the concert stage, dance criticism and the challenge of analyzing tap dancing in words, and her current project, a tap-opera that will incorporate vocalizing as well as dancing. The tape ends before the conclusion of the lecture.
