Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (128 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Dance-drama in two acts and six scenes, combining instrumental and vocal music, dance, and dramatic action. Set in the 12th century, the work depicts the legend of Bala Fassake Kouyate, a griot in the court of Niani, ruler of the Mandingo Empire. In the first act, he escorts Princess Nana Triban to the kingdom of the Sosso, where he encounters the sorcerous powers of her fiancé, Soumaoro Kante. He then journeys to a village where the great families of the region perform their totem dances, costumed and masked as their tutelary animals. He helps a gifted young drummer gain instruction from master musicians in the sacred forest. The second act presents dances of the different peoples of the Mandingo Empire, which incorporates Senegal, Mali, the Ivory Coast, and Guinea.
