- Biography
- Benjamin J. Davis, Jr., born in 1903 in Dawson, Georgia, was a civil rights lawyer, a New York City councilman, an author and editor, and a leader of the Communist Party of the United States of America. Davis joined the Communist Party in 1933 during his time as a civil rights attorney, and later became editor and publisher of party publications the "Daily Worker" and "The Worker," as well as the author of several publications. In 1943, Davis was elected as a Communist Party candidate to the New York City Council. He was re-elected in 1945, but defeated in 1949. As councilman, he led campaigns against police brutality and segregation in education, housing and sports. In 1949, Davis was one of eleven Communist leaders accused and convicted of conspiring to overthrow the United States government. Though imprisoned in 1951, Davis fought against segregation in federal prisons; he served additional time for refusing to name members of the Communist Party's Commission on Negro Work. At the time of his death in 1964, Davis was under indictment for refusing to register as a Soviet agent.
