Mosher (book-plate). -- Acquired by Carl H. Pforzheimer at Parke Bernet galleries, October 11, 1949, through A. S. W. Rosenbach.
Pforzheimer copy 2: Stated fourth edition, printed on laid paper with windmill watermark. -- Publisher's green buckram, with gilt-stamped border to upper cover and gilt spine titling; housed in quarter green morocco clamshell case, gilt spine title "Shelley." -- Provenance: From the library of Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain), shelf mark Bs/Ls 40. On the front pastedown, Clemens has recorded the gift of the book from Elizabeth Wallace: "S. L. Clemens 1909, from Betsy." With holograph annotations by Clemens on pages 37, 53, 63, 68, totaling more than fifty words. -- Acquired by the Pforzheimer Collection at the sale of Nick Karanovich's Mark Twain Collection, Sotheby's New York, June 19, 2003, through Bart Auerbach.
Clemens wrote Wallace on September 22 1909 to thank her for the volume: "It's a lovely little book, and as rich in sumptuous imagery as is Shelley himself. The reading so moved and charmed me that I read some Shelley under the inspiration of it" (Mark Twain and the Happy Island, page 131).
