  • First edition, first impression of the author's first book, with the advertisements at the rear dated September 1891. A second impression of Tim was published the following month to meet demand.
  • With biblical quote from David's lament on the death of Jonathan on t.p.: "Thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women" (Samuel 2, 1:26).
  • The novel inspired Forrest Reid's novel The Garden God (1905).

  • Howard Sturgis was born in London to a wealthy Boston family. His friends included Edith Wharton, Henry James, and A.C. Benson. On the death of his mother he moved into a large house on the edge of Windsor Park with his lover, William Haynes-Smith. Sturgis published three novels. Tim, his first novel, is a homoerotic novel set at Eton, Sturgis's alma mater.
