Summary
Video biography of dancer, choreographer, and teacher Nina Verchinina, much of it told in her own words. She describes her childhood interest in movement, which led to her study of ballet first in China, then in Paris with Olga Preobrajenska. She relates how she was chosen by Bronislava Nijinska to join Ida Rubinstein's company; the impact of her first sight of Isadora Duncan's dancing, and her chance attendance at Duncan's funeral; her experiences in de Basil's Original Ballet Russe, where she danced in Massine's Jeux d'enfants and Les présages. A narrator summarizes her activities on tour and in South America, particularly Rio de Janeiro, where Dalal Achcar invited her to choreograph ballets for the Ballet do Rio de Janeiro, and where she opened a studio in the early 1950s. Brief excerpts from her works Aria, Solitude, Suite barroca, Concerto grosso, Agnoscere, and Xavante are shown. Esther Piragibe, her assistant, describes and demonstrates basic elements of Verchinina's movement style, which seeks greater freedom and variety than she found in classical ballet.
