Vol. IV, "To which is prefix'd, The history of the Athenian society [by c. Gildon] and an Essay upon learning" has caption and running title: A supplement to the Athenian oracle.
In part a reprint, in part a continuation of "The Athenian gazette: or Casuisticall mercury," published from March 17, 1691, to June 14, 1697, by John Dunton and his collaborators, who styled themselves the Athenian society. The separate numbers bore the title Athenian mercury. They were mainly the work of Dunton, assisted by R. Sault, and Samuel Wesley, the elder. cf. Dunton's Life and errors, v. 1, p. 187-195; and H. R. Steeves in Mod. lang. rev., v.7, p. 363-371.
The "Athenian Mercury" was conducted by John Dunton, Richard Sault, and Samuel Wesley, who later called themselves, "The Athenian Society."--cf. Dunton's "life and errors."
