- Founded in 1918 by Hungarian violinist Jenö Léner, the Léner Quartet was one of the most celebrated string quartets of its day, playing on 4 continents and known especially for Beethoven interpretation. In 1942 a rift occurred between Léner and the other 3 members. The others hired a new first violinist and continued to call themselves the "Léner Quartet" until Léner also reconstituted a quartet with 3 other members and reclaimed the name.
