Ms. Rich [called Virginia Barnett in the interview] and Mr. Ratcliff discuss the history of the Atlanta Ballet and its name change from the Atlanta Civic Ballet in 1968; the company's founding 40 years ago by Dorothy Alexander; regional dance training; teachers returning to a regional base instead of remaining in New York; the facilities available in Atlanta; the structure of the company and school; Mr. Ratcliff's dance background; his teaching modern dance classes; David Blair's production of Swan lake for Atlanta Ballet; the company's repertory; community support; performing advantages for young regional dancers; the formation of regional dance associations; arts educational programs; touring; and fund raising.
